ACT Monaro Riverina Branch: Is that a Cordyline among the Callistemons? A walk in the streets of Hackett
24 March 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm AEDT
The Canberra suburb of Hackett was developed from the mid-1960s, with many houses built for ‘indoor-outdoor living’. This design, imported from southern California, became a major feature of houses and gardens across Australia’s suburbs from the 1950s.
This walk around Hackett will view from the street some Mid-Century Modern style gardens. Some are beautifully maintained originals; others are newly planted. We will meet with some of the gardeners who will tell us why this style appeals to them and about the plants they use. We will also see how this garden style intersected with the emergence of the Australian Bush Garden in a number of well grown native gardens, and some interesting blended gardens.
This walk has been devised and will be led by Anna Howe, an AGHS member and Hackett resident.
Total walk distance is approximately 2 km, on footpaths and flat grass verges, with plenty of shade.
When: 4.00 pm, Friday March 24, around 1.5 hrs, followed by refreshments.
Where: The walk will start at Maitland House, 100 Maitland St, Hackett.
Cost: $15 AGHS members, $20 for others.
Book: at Trybooking. Bookings essential.
