SA Branch: A wondrous plant connection – the Yokohama Nursery

As part of the SA History Festival, garden historian, Trevor Nottle, is presenting an illustrated talk: ‘A wondrous plant connection – the Yokohama Nursery.’

Adelaide and Stirling are a long way from Japan, yet there is a strong link that’s rarely been explored. The Yokohama Nursery Company supplied several Adelaide Hills gardens and Japanese influences remain evident today, none more so than Forest Lodge, the Hills retreat of John & Lucy Bagot. While on a private world cruise by steam yacht in the 1880s, they called at the well-known export nursery and purchased considerable collections. They purchased two volumes of coloured woodblock prints along with the plants, so identification could be verified on flowering. These volumes are now held in a private collection in Adelaide and will illustrate the talk.

Venue is the Goodman Building Lecture Room at the Botanic Gardens off Hackney Road. Doors open at 12 noon. Arrive early to buy your raffle tickets and secure your seats. Ed McAlister and Richard Heathcote will start formal proceedings at 12.30pm. After his talk Trevor is happy to answer questions from the floor.

Light refreshments will be available and the raffle will be drawn at 1.30pm.

AGHS has partnered with the Friends of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens for this event. Attendance is free, but please bring a credit card for parking and cash for the raffle (Tickets $3 each or 5 for $5).
