A book is a gift you can open again and again.
So said Garrison Keillor, that wry, wise American author, singer and humorist, whose Prairie Home Companion radio show offered so much insight into the human condition. And he’s right, of course, about the gift of a book. If you haven’t yet done your Christmas shopping here are some ideas:
From the AGHS’s own shop are three very different publications by members:
- Clare Gleeson tells an intriguing story of Alfred Buxton, who played an important role in developing Aotearoa’s horticultural landscape. Gleeson highlights the women who supported and took pleasure in his work: The Fairer Side of Buxton
- John Dwyer’s beautifully illustrated anthology offers a wealth of information about weeds but about our relationship with nature: Weeding between the lines is being offered at a special Christmas price.
- Rosemary Simpson, a member of AGHS since the beginning, has written the story of her gardening life in a volume accompanied by glorious photographs by Kimbal Baker: Rosemary’s Gardening Life
The AGHS book blog offers reviews of plenty more books that may appeal to garden lovers or indeed novices, such as:
- Advolly Richmond’s A Short History of Flowers (reviewed by Michaela Hill)
- Caroline Parker’s The Medicinal Garden, Treat, feed and soothe straight from your garden (reviewed by Maria Hitchcock)
- Caroline Ball’s A splendour of succulents and cacti (reviewed by Clive Probyn)
