On approaching Fifield for the first time, there is the sensation of straying off course and arriving in a time long past. A time out of sync with the frenetic pace of the 21st century. There are Dickensonian overtones in the tale of the elderly spinster who lived her life tending her cats and garden until her death two years ago.
It is as though both house and garden have slumbered through an entire century – oblivious to the world of today – its dignity intact – arriving in the new millennium without pretence or vanity.
