Glebe, its History and Gardens. A Walking Tour led by Robert Hannan
Starting/finish point: Rothwell Lodge, Glebe.
24 Ferry Road, Glebe NSW
Cost: $20 members; $30 non-members; students $5
Book: at Trybooking.
Robert Hannan, an AGHS member with broad knowledge of the history of the area, will take us on a two and a half hour walk through the streets of historic Glebe. Robert is a retired landscape designer and with Peter Crawshaw has owned Rothwell Lodge since 2014. Robert and Peter are members of the Glebe Society and were part of a sub-committee that produced a ten day exhibition (with a publication) in 2019 called the Villas of Glebe and Forest Lodge pre 1870.
In 2021 they produced an exhibition for St John’s Glebe to mark the 150th anniversary of the current church building. Robert is currently the NSW Branch Chair for the Australiana Society and Peter is national Secretary.
As part of the walk, Robert has arranged for us to visit Lyndhurst, the 1836 John Verge house where we will walk in the garden and view the front of the house. Francis Newman was the first gardener at Lyndhurst who became the head of the newly formed Royal Botanic Gardens Hobart 1845 until his death in 1859.
After stopping in Foley Park along the way to rest, we will finish the tour at Rothwell Lodge where refreshments will be served.
Street parking is available near the venue
