You are invited to a guided walk of Wirra Willa Gardens with City of Armadale Project Officer Grant Nixon Afterwards please join us for lunch (at own your cost) at historic Ye Olde Narrogin Inne, Corner of South West Hwy & Albany Hwy, Armadale.
Wirra Willa Gardens were laid out in the 1930s and developed over the years by successive owners. In recognition of the garden’s heritage value the property was given permanent status on the Register of the National Estate on 21 October 1980, and is one of a small number of the State’s gardens listed. In December 2008 it was listed on the Armadale Municipal Heritage Inventory and in March 2009 placed on the Heritage Council WA State Register of Heritage Places.
Wirra Willa is of such interest that it was the first garden visited by the WA Branch 35 years ago shortly after formation. Members who attended the August 2017 AGM in Armadale, viewed the garden from the periphery and were alarmed at its deterioration. Consequently, the Branch communicated this to the Heritage Council’s Director and the City of Armadale. Now after years of neglect and escaping an application for residential development, the City of Armadale recently acquired Wirra Willa with the aim of restoring it. This guided walk will be a unique opportunity to view the garden in its current state prior to plans and work being undertaken.
Afterwards, please join us for lunch (at your own cost) at the historic Ye Olde Narrogin Inne. The building is an outstanding and rare example of Inter-War Old English style and is on a site that has continuously been a hotel since at least 1856.
Meet: at Ye Olde Narrogin Inne Car Park at 10am so that you have plenty of time to walk across Albany Highway to Wirra Willa Gardens (<100m) to begin the guided walk starting at 10:30am.
Cost: Free to members and non-members
Book: at Trybooking. Tickets limited to 20.
