Vic Branch Webinar: Little Men in Red Hats: The Story of Garden Gnomes
11 July 2023 @ 5:45 pm AEST
Winter online lecture by Dr David Marsh, UK
What do you know about gnomes? Are they different to dwarves? Or to Elves? Goblins? Pixies? Leprechauns, Boggarts? Or any of the other small folk who live in our imagination and stories…and maybe are out there in real life too if only we knew where to look? Why did they become both such popular ornaments despite being considered ‘vulgar’ by many people? And why are they banned at the Chelsea Flower Show?
This talk tells the story of the garden gnome and the two wealthy but eccentric gardeners who introduced them to their grand estates – Sir Charles Isham and Sir Frank Crisp. And what’s it all got to do with George Harrison?
