Synopsis
David Yencken was a gallery owner, property developer and administrator in Melbourne, introducing the discipline of landscape architecture in to the urban housing and construction projects he shared with notable Australian architects and designers in post-world war II Australia. He was instrumental in drafting the legislation of the Australian Heritage Act (Cwlth) and in 1975 he became the first Chairman of the Australian Heritage Commission. He established the Register of the National Estate and commenced the administration of heritage grants. In this role he was also instrumental in encouraging the establishment of the Australian Garden History Society.
